Since 2014, my partner and I have salvaged, reconditioned, and reused building materials for both private restoration and renovation projects, and professional projects under Tanjen Building Solutions Ltd. This work has positively impacted the environment as significant amounts of construction waste have been diverted from landfills, but it has also decreased energy requirements and carbon emissions that would have been incurred to create the new building materials required to complete these improvements to existing structures.
Renovation projects using salvage have included two full kitchens, numerous bathrooms, full restoration of 1912 exterior fir siding, fully salvaged picket fence, use of significant leftover concrete (otherwise discarded), and various other initiatives.
Salvage work has included full dismantle of 406 Nicola Street and outbuilding, along with salvage at 3 additional homes demolished in the Kelson Group’s City Gardens project (Kamloops), under supervision of Hall Environmental Ltd. Additional salvage completed in the 600 block of St Paul Street, as well as 2-3 trips annually to Seattle to source materials for repurpose (e.g. our reclaimed Kohler kitchen sink cost $35 USD but is valued at $1200 CAD, and is in perfect condition).
Our general contracting business is on hold while I am in school, but work on salvage and information sharing continues as opportunities arise.
